Salvias

Salvias are a bright addition to the garden and come in a range of colours including pinks, reds, orange, purple, white and even black. Hardy to most conditions, they will grow well in most parts of Australia and are great for water-wise gardens. Suited to perennial borders, cottage gardens and also great for bringing bees and other beneficial insects into the vegie patch. There are also some culinary salvias, including the well-known herb sage, and also pineapple sage.

Height: Varieties range from 30cm up to about 2m.

Width: Varies according to variety but usually about as wide as is high.

Position: Full sun to part shade, will tolerate most aspects including hot west-facing positions.

Flowers: Colourful lobed flowers, sometimes on long flower spikes. Colours ranging from reds and pinks to purple, orange and white.

Hardiness: Most varieties are frost tolerant, drought tolerant and heat tolerant.

Care: Can be pruned back almost to ground level after flowering.
